April Newsletter

An early morning walk this morning, (ok so it was 9am and not so early) was all I needed to put pen to paper and start my short newsletter to you this month. I love walking – it helps me to think through and plan my day plus think through any issues that need solving oh and many new ideas are developed!

This month I found an interesting article for you to read which I recommend you print out and put on your fridge. “Post Work- Out Foods You Can and Should Eat For Recovery”. Thanks to

Yes, I’ve stuck it to my fridge too so everytime I get home from a walk or a ride, I am reminded now of alternative snacks I can eat post exercise instead of perhaps the odd biscuit or cake….. (yip I was guilty)…

Your product review this month is “A Bit Attitude” Capris. Ever had a pair of pants that the elastic at the waist twists and becomes annnoying inside the waistband? Well these ones don’t. Check them out.

Merry Christmas, and Welcome Lola Getts Active to New Zealand!

I’m not feeling too “christmasee” this year, how about you? Personally I will be glad when the big day has passed and life can resume to just a semi-chaotic state, thats how I prefer it.

Anyway enough grinch talk, I am rudely raving on when I should be introducing a wonderful new range to BigLove, another,  all the way from the US of A…..drum roll please…..Lola Getts Active.  At last, a range of cross functional activewear for the woman who celebrates her curves, and busy lifestyle!

I had a lengthy conversation with Jodi, co-owner of Lola Getts, and among other things I asked her what had prompted her to design plus size activewear. She said that while she and her friends worked out at gym they noticed that there just wasn’t a choice of fashionable workout clothing for the bigger ‘gals’ .(loved her accent, its kinda southern…)So they put their combined talents and experience together and have come up with this stylish plus size activewear range. They used a real plus size model to create the original patterns, so the garments have true plus size shape as well as style. I loved her philosophy as well, which is exactly the same as my own, we are not all a regular size, but it is important to exercise, and keep fit. Now you can, and look really sharp too!!

So Merry Christmas y’all, check out the new range, there will be more coming in the New Year, email with any questions you may have, be safe, be cool, keep on movin’ and have some fun!!

Come on, eat up all those exercise calories!

Come on, eat up those exercise calories! Did you ever get that statement at the dinner table? I think not. It was more likely one of these… you are not leaving the table until that plate is empty….there are starving children in Africa…. if you eat all your dinner you can have some ice cream….and on and on we could go! Do you say these words, or similar, to your kids now? When kids say they are not hungry, generally they are not hungry(unless you are trying to make them eat tripe). Even now as an informed adult when I am not hungry, and I really want to eat something,  I still will. Bad huh.  I am from the above dinner time generation. Shame. Guilt. Eat. Recently my friend posted this video of herself talking about her weight loss journey. It is her personal  honesty that I resonate with here, and I am sure we can all relate in some way. Our relationship with eating food coupled with our lack of knowledge of what is required to burn it off  has had a devastating effect on many of us today. My Fitness Pal has been a great tool for Alison(I know there are other similar sites too)and as she explains about the food diary and exercise for calories you can perhaps understand what and why we have been doing wrong all these years. So the moral of this story? Exercise for calories, then only eat  the calories you got from the exercise. For me….simple plan, slow learner!

Bariatric Surgery – Yes or No?

Bariatric surgery is the generic term for the weight loss surgery. It does not mean a specific option that you can choose, for example, gastric banding, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. Bariatric surgery seems to be continually evolving and there are probably even more options than these.

Before going ahead with any operation there is a lot of  information to wade through, weeks and months pass before taking the plunge, plus interviews and tests and pre-op diets and all that pyschological torment to deal with. Plus, if all that is not  bad enough, you have the well meaning opinions of your family, friends, workmates and maybe your personal trainer to consider! Oh god help me!! Give me a sign, hit me on the head with a coconut or something!!

I have myself over the years considered ‘going under the knife’ as they say, but at the end of the day, bottom line, to coin a few well worn cliches….I am a chicken!  I have always had the opportunity to keep myself reasonably physically fit, and although I will  always be a big girl, this is my decision. However, I have met many many people who have had a weight-loss operation, and I am happy to report all of them have not regretted the decision. But, I know there are people who have not had such a happy time, it’s weird that I haven’t actually met anyone who has had a bad experience, just heard from others.

If you have taken the bariatric way, and are losing weight steadily and find yourself looking for some great exercise wear, I cannot recommend highly enough the Power Legs that are available here. Either in the shorts or full leg, these are  tight fitting pants with a high lycra content that forces  blood to circulate, removes perspiration away from your skin and keeps your muscles warm, all while you exercise! Dare I mention the taboo subject of “loose skin??”, oops too late, Ive said it! These are the ultimate friend to this little problem xx

If you’ve done it, I am in awe. I hope it has been everything you wanted. I believe you must still exercise and diet to help the kilos  come off….two words…POWER LEGS!

Real Womens 2012 Series is underway!

The Real Womens 2012 series is underway and I had a great day last Sunday(Feb 12th). My friend Alison and I decided to participate in the first of the Real Womens Duathlon series at Ambury Park, last minute entry of course, no foward planning here!

It rained. Just a little at first. Then it bucketed down right at the end. Nice.

We had a terrific time. Really. This is such a great event. It is not designed for athletes. It is designed for real women. First you run/walk, then you ride your bike, then you do another little run/walk. No winners, no losers, just participants. You are well supported by the organisers and the volunteers who line the routes.

You can enter as an individual,or as a team of 2 or 3. Thanks Jane Patterson. I like the philosophy of this series. I liked hearing the  heart warming stories of the real women who had overcome huge obstacles to participate for the first time, and to hear of one lady who has participated in every event since the series started, we’re talking 6 years here!

It was wonderful to see kids running out at the end to support their Mum/Sister/Cousin and run the last 100 metres with them, smiles all round! You got a goody bag, a flash new shirt, a yummy breakfast and a fair chance to win one of many great spot prizes, including a really cool bike.

It was well worth the drenching.

Don’t put it off, grab a friend and love the experience!  Real Women’s Duathlon Series

Happy Frivolous New Year!

I say ‘frivolous’ quite a lot and  prefer the definition from the merrian-webster  dictionary a : of little weight or importance b : having no sound basis (as in fact or law) <a frivolouslawsuit>. 2. a : lacking in seriousness.

It probably sums up what I have to say most of the time, and I’m happy with that. I like the word.

Well here we are people, one week in to the New Year(what?? already??) how about those resolutions aye? Holding up still? Or were they just Frivolous Resolutions spoken with the utmost sincerity from a generally clear thinking brain that has been infused with a couple of glasses of chardonnay? I know some of my best intentions have happened while I have been in this state, and one(he had many!) of my father’s most favourite sayings to me was….”Lu, The road to hell is paved with good intentions”.

I have decided not to go to hell this year, I have decided to go to a place where I am happy, I will have a healthy weight, I will have a  place where I can grow things for us to eat, and I will go to places on my bike, everyday. These are not resolutions.

I will continue to say mostly frivolous stuff this year, like I said, I am happy with that. But I sincerely wish you all a Happy and Healthy New Year!

And here is something that is right up there in frivolousness…http://www.buzzfeed.com/daves4/25-everyday-things-you-never-knew-had-names
